What’s a lesson with us like?

Our teaching style is rooted in the idea that music should never be stressful, whether you are playing a song at 240bpm, thinking about your workload, or just your relationship with your instructor; we prioritize comfort above all else.

Typically we will have our first lesson be an icebreaker/introduction to iron out any issues that may arise with online teaching (computer/video/sound issues most commonly) so that you don’t spend money on something that may not work for yourself or your child. After that initial lesson, in which we will assess your current progress and set up a personalized course that is tailored to each individual student. From there we will learn songs, music theory, songwriting, or any other music related skill that you can imagine, all the while doing anything and everything we can to keep the lessons fun, engaging, and rewarding.

Many students pick up lessons with the intention of working with us for a couple of months, and learning a few songs to play for their friends and loved ones. While often times students end up discovering a new passion for music and decide that they want to take things more seriously and stick around for as long as they want. Both of these approaches are great for us, and as your instructors, all we care about is your growth and happiness with music!

Frequently Asked Questions:

I am a complete Beginner, do I need to own a guitar before the introductory lesson?

Not at all! Most of the things we cover in the introductory lesson have more to do with scheduling and planning for the future. In fact, many of our students will use time in the intro to ask about what equipment they should have, which we are more than happy to offer recommendations and links to preapproved equipment.

Do online lessons even work?

I can’t tell you how many times I have been asked this question. What I can tell you is that we have had well over 200 students online since the beginning of 2020 and that those students collectively boast a success rate that is notably higher than In person lessons ever had. Before the pandemic I was highly skeptical/critical of online lessons but I have since found that the comfort and flexibility offered by online lessons seem to make them much more effective for students of all ages and skill levels.

How long does it take to play a song?/How many lessons does the average student take?

This is probably the most common and difficult question to answer, as the length of time needed to master fundamental skills varies from person to person. However, often times we will start on our first song within 2-3 lessons and your growth will be dependent on your commitment. As far as how long students work with us, that varies usually from 10-25 weeks, but some of our more serious students have been with us for years.

What should I know/prepare before our introductory lesson/assessment?

If you are brand new to music lessons, or to guitar as a whole, all you need is yourself!

If you are a more advanced student, we ask that you have any practice materials or songs prepared and ready to perform for our assessment. That being said, please don’t stress out about being perfect, mistakes are an important part of music and the whole reason you are coming for lessons is to improve!

What if it isn’t a good fit/isn’t what I expected from lessons?

There is no obligation/commitment to sign up after our introductory lesson/assessment and there is never hard feelings if things just don’t work out. We do ask that students give us a heads up, should they plan to cancel lessons the next month, but we will not charge for a month in which 0 lessons were attended.

Do you offer in-person lessons?

We do, however we are currently located in Washougal, Washington at the moment and even many local students prefer the convenience of online lessons, and typically take one in-person lesson every few months.
